小圈圈的英文

coterie和clique都是指一小群人常聚在一起, 但意思有一點不一樣.

coterie是因為對某些東西有興趣而聚在一起, 也不喜歡別人加入. 例如: her coterie of fellow musicians(她一群音樂家的朋友)

clique是指一群人常聚在一起, 而且對圈外人不友善. 例如: high school cliques (高中的小圈圈)

用懷疑的態度..的英文

這新型冠狀病毒(Covid-19)大流行, 很很醫療人員寫了很多論文(paper), 通常論文要其他同業審查(review), 才可發表, 以增加論文的可信度, 但有些論文還沒有經過審查, 新聞就急著登出, 這時, 看這些論文和新聞, 就要用懷疑的態度去看:

預感的英文

Steve Jobs是個工作狂, 他這麼拼命工作的一個原因是他有預感他不會活太久: Jobs told Egan about his premonition that he would not live a long life.

Premonition: a feeling or belief that something is going to happen when there is no definite reason to believe it will.

放空

假如你有寫待辦事項的習慣, 什麼待辦事項最難做到?

有一次一個朋友說, “Do Nothing”最難達成.

這do nothing就是放空, 腦子什麼也不想, 完全的休息. 放空還有那些英文的講法?

zone out: 是忘了周遭的事物地放鬆. 例如: zone out in front of the TV.

vegetate: 這也是do nothing. vegetable是可食用的植物. 像植物般的發呆就全然的放空吧.

在Steve Jobs的自傳裏, 有一段時間, 他很忙, 忙到晚上回到家, 他累到只能看半小時的電視, 然後放空. (All I could do was watch a half hour of TV and vegetate)

小跟班的英文

小跟班跟在某人旁邊, 通常是帶有崇拜的人. 英文中有幾個很像的字.

entourage: 在重要人物旁幫忙的一群人. 比如總統或董事長旁的秘書, 特助們. 這些人不見得崇拜那個人, 有時是純工作上, 或主僱的關係. 並不完全是小跟班.

sidekick或acolyte是兩個最好的翻譯. 它們的英文解釋可以讓你了解它們的差別.

sidekick: a person who helps and spends a lot of time with someone who is usually more important, powerful, etc.

acolyte: someone who follows and admires a leader.

這兩個字中, acolyte是我覺得最貼切的, 因為acolyte是在老大身邊, 崇拜老大的人. 在Harry Potter中, Malfoy旁, 胖胖的Crabbe和Goyle就是小跟班.
