這look forward to的文法有點奇特, 以前以為to後面的動詞是用原型, 但正確的用法是V-ing.

比如說, 你在找工作, 接到公司的面試通知, 你要說很期待和他/她見面. 你可以說I look forward to meeting you in the interview.

昨天, 我的部門要做一個demo給公司的大老板, 因為產品設計很先進, 跟同業比起來, 我說”This will blow our competitors out of the water”.

今天, 以前的老板Tom跟我現在的老板說, Alaska在等我們的提案, 這件事, 3個月前他交帶給我, 但是這麼久沒回Alaska, Tom說:”I’m guessing the ball was dropped somewhere”.

drop the ball是把事情搞砸, 就像在籃球賽中, 有人把球傳給你, 你drop the ball, 你就搞砸了那一次進攻.

-ish是很可愛的說法. 第一次聽到-ish是上班的時候, 我同事說, “I can be there around 4pm-ish”. 意思是說, 我大概下午4點會到.

-ish是大概, 很像的意思. -ish可以隨便加在很多字後面, 像:

Her hair is gray-ish. 

He is Trumpish. 他像(Donald) Trump.

Sheepish: 覺得很丟臉(像羊一樣)

mulish是像騾一樣的固執. mule是騾, mulish是像騾.

waspish是像wasp. wasp是一種蜂類, 你一點點搔擾到它, 它馬上生氣來螫你. 假如有人說你是waspish, 是說你像wasp一樣, 容易生氣.

在卡內基的一本關於public speaking的書中, 他鼓勵多使用有圖像的(visual)字. 像aback就是有圖像的字.

aback是很驚訝的意思. back的倒退. 一個人會突然倒退, 像下面的小黑, 不就是很驚 訝?

通常aback會和take一起用, 比如說某個同事被解顧的新聞, 你很訝異, 你可以說, I was taken aback when I heard the news!

當你要講一個東西, 但又想不起來怎麼說的時候, thingy是很cute的說法. 比如你和另一半買了一個零食很好吃, 要介紹給朋友, 但又想不起來那個零食是什麼, 你可以說”What was the snack thingy that we bought the other day?”

今天在看一本AI(人工智慧)的書, 書裏面講到”Unless your technology initiatives are driven by clear business goals and viability, you run the risk of using AI aimlessly, like a hammer looking for nails“, 這like a hammer looking for a nail是什麼意思?

英文有一說法”when you have a hammer everything looks like a nail”, 意思是說當你有一個鐵鎚 , 任何一個東西都像釘子. 所以書要表達的是, 當一個公司的人學會了AI, 人們會用AI去解決任何問題, 或開發任何產品.

上禮拜在開會的時候, 和同事對人工智慧的定義和了解有不同的意見, 他要用他的了解去看有那些產品可以開發, 他問我同意他的看法. 我說”I don’t care”.

“I don’t care”是帶有負面, 不爽的意思. 另一個同事Luis跟我說我應該用其他的字, 像indifferent, 像”I am indifferent”. 這個說法比較中性.

另外一個比較cute的說法是”I am not married to …”. 如說, 你覺得公司應該用中華電信的收機, 另外一個同事覺得遠傳的比較好, 在爭執中, 你有點累, 你不在爭乎公司是不是用中華電信, 你可以說, “We can use anything. I am not married to Chunghwa Telecome”
